I am an electronics and telecommunication engineer and I have been doing a job in multinational companies for 6 years.
I would work on some very complicated designs which go into the processors and IC’s which are used in many mobile phones, computers, and servers. I was good at design and very good at finding problems in the design.
And yet I didn’t love it.
I did not like the idea of working for a company and doing work what they want me to do.
I am more of a free bird person. I think it is with everyone, if you end up doing what you do not love, you always try to find out something which will give you pleasure, which will give you peace of mind.
In most cases, it is a necessity for someone to not choose what they love, so people start developing hobbies.
Watch the introduction video for this article here:
What is the hobby of a person?
A hobby is something which a person really loves to do.
What if you make your career around your hobby?
Each day will become a cakewalk for you. You will not feel tired or feel irritated, you will not notice a ticking clock which is there in most of the 9 to5 jobs.
It will not be work for you anymore, it will be like you are just continuing with your hobby.
You might say, my hobby is watching a football game or watching a cricket match. But in my opinion, it cannot be a hobby, it is a way of entertaining your mind.
A hobby can be cooking different dishes, reading books, swimming, playing table tennis, etc. If you love cooking then you can be the best chef in the world. If you like reading books then you can become a mentor to people.
In most of the fields, if you are able to identify a problem and narrow it down into small tasks then you can do wonders.
Believe me, it’s all about finding the problems you face and building a solution around it.
So, it all boils down to 3 basic questions
- Finding what are you passionate about?
- Do you really have, what it takes to build a business around your passion?
- Is there really a market demand for such a solution?
If you can answer the above 3 questions then definitely you have identified your passion and you know there is a market out there which is calling you and you are talented about building a business out of your passion.
For example, you are really passionate about pet animals and you have a pet dog as well. One fine day you thought about creating a toy car for dogs. You are an engineer and you have the talent for making a toy car for dogs. But is there a market out there for this product?
So there must be an overlapping section between the answers to the above three questions.
Methods to Identify your passion
Here, I am going to explain to you some of the methods which you can apply to identify a niche. There are the methods that were taught to me by my mentor and I have applied it together to get answers.
Find out what you loved as a child
True passion can be found out when you look back on your childhood. You might be answering people around you as a kid when asked about “what are you going to become?”
I remember my answer to this question was always: opening a shop like my uncle.
So maybe try to remember about your childhood dreams, things you were interested in, you can even ask your parents or your siblings.
They say that a child has the purest heart, put some lights on that child inside you.
Note down your strengths
Think about what are you good at. Everyone has one special or key strength which he/she knows about very clearly.
It’s just that, you need to find it out and note it down on a big white paper and stick it near your working station.
Also, you must be having multiple strengths in a lot of areas of life. Someone will be very patient in handling things in life, someone will have a magical power of remembering things which they have learned. It can be anything, just note down the strengths.
This will give you positive energy about yourself and provide a clear passage for your mind to think about your endless capabilities.
Feedback from family & Friends
This is a very simple yet effective way to know about passion. But many times we ignore this. Sometimes, your family members, your friends with whom you hang out most knows you much better than you.
Just go ahead and ask them, “If I want to do a career in some area, what am I good at?”
You will immediately get answers from them.
Find out your personality type
There are plenty of Softwares out there which will ask you some set of questions and come up with some answers about your personality type.
There is one such website that I followed and I think it gives a very effective prediction of your personality based on limited questions being asked in a personality test.
The link to personality test: https://www.16personalities.com/
You can give it a try. It is worth reading about your type of personality and you can relate to the reports which this test will generate.
Expertise to Build a business around your passion
Once you identify your passion, the next step is to know that are you really talented about your passion in such a way that you can build a business out of it.
This is a very important thing to consider before finalizing on the niche. Because, if you do not have the talent to implement ideas into a product or a business then you are not going to make any money.
There is nothing like everyone is born with talent, at least you should be confident that you can build talent or learn what it takes to build a business around your passion.
Even you are no expert in it, you can always learn and become an expert. But is it worth it? You need to answer this to you and be honest about your answer.
Knowing market demand
This is a very basic step in building any business.
You need to know if there is a market for the products and services you are going to provide out there.
For this, you need to do in-depth market research and make sure that the product will be well appreciated in the market.
